Celebrating Black Joy During Black History Month

As a triple negative breast cancer thriver, my journey has been one of both challenge and triumph. I have faced the harsh realities of a diagnosis that disproportionately affects Black women, often at later stages. This experience has fueled my passion for advocacy, as I recognize the urgent need to raise awareness about the unique challenges we face in healthcare. It is crucial to continue this advocacy even in survivorship because our voices can help dismantle the barriers that contribute to these disparities.

This month, as we honor the rich tapestry of Black history, let us also uplift the narratives of joy that have often been overshadowed. Let us celebrate the achievements of our ancestors, who fought tirelessly for our rights, and recognize the joy they found in their victories, no matter how small. Their resilience paved the way for us to embrace our joy today.

In choosing joy, we reclaim our narrative. We acknowledge the challenges we face, but we also recognize the power of our laughter, our creativity, and our love. Black joy is a revolutionary act; it defies the stereotypes and limitations placed upon us. It is a celebration of life, a testament to our strength, and a commitment to thriving despite adversity.

As we navigate the complexities of our world, let us remember that joy is not just a response to our circumstances; it is a choice. This Black History Month, I encourage everyone to embrace their joy, to share it, and to let it shine brightly. Together, we can create a legacy of joy that honors our past and inspires future generations.

In the spirit of Black joy, let us continue to uplift one another, celebrate our victories, and advocate for a world where our joy is not just an exception but the norm. My journey as a thriver and advocate is a testament to the importance of this work, and I am committed to ensuring that Black women receive the care and support they deserve.

Embracing the Power of Yes: A Journey of Change and Growth

The concept of New Year's resolutions often comes to mind. Personally, I have never been a firm believer in setting resolutions, but I have come to realize that there are certain patterns in my life that I consistently strive to change. One such pattern is my desire to read more. Every year, I make a promise to myself that I will dedicate more time to reading, and yet, I often find myself falling short of this goal. It's a recurring cycle that I can't seem to break. Perhaps it's my Virgo nature that contributes to this cycle. As a Virgo, I am known for my meticulous planning and attention to detail. I always get a planner and jot down all the things I intend to do. It's almost comical how I am constantly "Virgoing" – a term I use to describe my tendency to overanalyze and overthink things. While this trait can be useful in certain aspects of life, it often becomes a hindrance when it comes to creativity and spontaneity. Being a creative person, ...
